What is an AI-native fintech?
Most "AI banking" is a conventional app with a chatbot in the corner. An AI-native fintech is the other thing: a platform where the model is the interface, and where speaking, scanning or describing what you want is how the work gets done.
Bolted on versus built in
The test is simple. Remove the AI from the product and see what is left. If you still have a complete banking app with menus, forms and a transfer screen, the AI was a feature. If what is left cannot be used, the product was AI-native.
That distinction decides what the product can do for someone who is not comfortable with forms. An assistant that explains a menu still requires you to use the menu. A system built around intent lets you say what you want in your own words, in your own language, and carries it out.
What AI-native looks like in a payment
A household gets a paper electricity bill. In a digital bank, someone opens the app, finds bill payments, selects the biller from a list, types a meter number from the paper, types the amount, and confirms. Five screens and two chances to mistype a number that will send money to a stranger.

Why it matters most in emerging markets
The users least served by traditional banking apps are the ones for whom typing, English-only interfaces and multi-step forms are barriers. Those are exactly the barriers an AI-native interface removes, which is why the approach is more consequential in Lagos or Accra than in London.
It also matters for the paper economy. A large share of African household and small-business payments start life as a physical bill, an invoice or a handwritten slip. A camera that understands those documents is worth more than another dashboard.
